The Chess Club aims to help members increase their cognitive perception, concentration and reasoning capability. Children must be signed up to participate.

There will be two sessions offered on Wednesdays at lunch hour (12:25-12:55).

Session 1 – February 14 to March 14- will have a free play structure. Students will be divided into either a beginner or experienced group and learn or practice their game by playing other similarly-skilled players. Volunteers will help beginners learn to play and offer strategy ideas to those with more experience.

Session 2 – After Spring Break – The second session will run from April 11th to May 9th, on Wednesdays at lunch hour in the library (12:25-12:55). Previous participants and new players (if there is space) will be offered a chance to play in a chess tournament. Students will play several games against other players over a 5 week session. At the end of 5 weeks, we will name our chess champion(s) – and have a party for all!

Students must regularly attend the first session in order to be given priority in entering the second session tournament. Students who did not participate in session 1 or who did not attend it regularly may be offered a spot in session 2 but only if space permits.

Please do not register your child if you know they will miss a session as they will be removed from the tournament and their spot could have gone to another student.

The chess club is looking for one or two more volunteers with chess play experience to help watch the chess games during the tournament. Any volunteer who can attend all sessions will be guaranteed a spot for a student of their choice.
